How to Transfer a .gy Domain

Move your existing .gy domain to OEsupplies. Your site and email keep working throughout.

Published June 2026 · OEsupplies

A domain transfer moves management of an existing .gy domain from your current registrar to OEsupplies. The domain name does not change, your website does not have to go down, and your email keeps working. What changes is who you deal with for renewals, DNS changes, and support.

OEsupplies is a CoCCA-accredited .gy registrar. We submit transfers directly to the .gy registry, not through a chain of resellers. That matters when something needs fixing quickly.

Why people transfer

A few common reasons:

  • The current registrar is slow to respond or hard to reach.
  • Renewals keep getting missed because reminders go to an old email address.
  • You want DNSSEC and WHOIS privacy but your current provider does not include them.
  • You have multiple domains scattered across different registrars and want everything in one place.

None of those require migrating your hosting or changing anything about your website. The transfer is purely an administrative move at the registry level.

Before you start

Go through this checklist before contacting us. It will make the process faster.

  • Domain is unlocked. Most registrars lock domains by default to prevent unauthorized transfers. Log in to your current registrar's control panel and disable the transfer lock (sometimes called "domain lock" or "registrar lock").
  • Auth/EPP code in hand. Once the domain is unlocked, request the authorization code from your current registrar. They may call it an EPP code, auth code, or transfer secret. It is a short alphanumeric string, not a password you set yourself.
  • Registrant email is current. The registry may send a confirmation to the registrant email address on file. Make sure that address is one you can actually access. If not, update it at your current registrar before initiating the transfer.
  • Note your current DNS settings. Before anything else changes, write down your existing DNS records, particularly your MX records (for email) and any A or CNAME records for your website. If you switch to our nameservers, we will copy these over, but having your own copy is good practice.

Step by step

  1. Check your domain's current status. Use the .gy WHOIS tool to confirm the domain is registered, see the expiry date, and check whether it is currently locked. A domain showing as "clientTransferProhibited" needs to be unlocked before a transfer can proceed.
  2. Unlock the domain and get the auth code. Do this at your current registrar's control panel or by contacting their support team. The auth code is typically generated on demand and valid for a limited time, so request it when you are ready to move.
  3. Send us the domain name and auth code. Contact us via the form on the Domains page or reach us at the contact section. Include the full domain name (e.g. yourbusiness.gy) and the auth code. We will also ask for your current DNS records if you want us to replicate them on our nameservers.
  4. We initiate the transfer with the registry. Once we have what we need, we submit the transfer request to the .gy registry on your behalf. The registry processes the request and we monitor the status throughout.
  5. You approve the transfer if prompted. Depending on the registry process, you may receive a confirmation email at the registrant address asking you to approve the transfer. Approve it promptly, as there is usually a response window. We will let you know if this step is required.
  6. We confirm completion and set everything up. Once the transfer clears, we confirm with you and configure DNSSEC, DNS, and WHOIS privacy. If you need MX records or email forwarding set up, we handle that at the same time.

Will my website or email go down?

No, provided the DNS records are preserved. This is the part most people worry about unnecessarily.

A registrar transfer does not automatically change your nameservers or DNS records. If you keep your current nameservers during the transfer, nothing changes at the DNS level at all. Your site and email continue working exactly as before.

If you want to move to our Cloudflare Anycast nameservers at the same time, we copy your existing DNS records first, verify they are correct, and only then switch the nameservers over. The propagation window is short and there should be no noticeable downtime. We walk you through the timing so you are not making changes at a busy time of day.

What does it cost?

The OEsupplies rate is G$10,000 per year, flat, for any .gy extension. There are no transfer fees on top of that.

A transfer typically adds one year to your current registration. So if your domain was set to expire in eight months, after the transfer it will expire in twenty months. You are not losing the time you already paid for at your old registrar.

If you want to lock in a longer term, a 10-year registration works out to roughly G$7,500 per year effective. Payment is via MMG (Mobile Money Guyana) after we confirm the transfer details.

What is included after the transfer

Every .gy domain managed by OEsupplies includes:

  • DNSSEC — cryptographic DNS validation, configured automatically. Protects against cache poisoning and DNS spoofing.
  • WHOIS privacy — your personal contact information is shielded from public WHOIS lookups.
  • Cloudflare Anycast DNS — fast nameservers distributed globally, with DDoS protection built in. Optional; you can keep your existing nameservers if you prefer.
  • Email setup help — if you need MX records, SPF, DKIM, or DMARC configured, we handle it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose my remaining registration time when I transfer?

No. A transfer adds one year to your current expiry. If your domain had ten months left, after the transfer it will have twenty-two months. You do not forfeit anything you paid at your old registrar.

What exactly is an auth code or EPP code?

It is an authorization token that your current registrar generates to confirm you have the right to move the domain. Think of it as a one-time password for the transfer. Log in to your registrar's control panel and look for "auth code", "EPP code", or "transfer secret" in the domain settings. If you cannot find it, their support team can send it to your registrant email address.

Can I transfer a .gy domain that has expired?

Generally no. Expired domains are usually placed in a locked redemption state and cannot be transferred until they are active again. If your domain has lapsed, you will need to renew it with your current registrar first. Contact us with the domain name and we can check the current status via WHOIS and advise on the best path forward.

Will DNSSEC be maintained through the transfer?

Yes. If your current registrar had DNSSEC enabled, we coordinate the DS record update at the registry level to avoid a validation gap. Once the transfer completes, DNSSEC is active and monitored on our end. If your current registrar did not have DNSSEC set up, we configure it as part of the post-transfer setup.

How long does the transfer take?

The registry processes transfers and the timing depends on the registry's queue. We initiate the request promptly once we have your auth code and keep you updated at each stage. We do not publish a specific day count because the registry controls that part of the timeline, and we prefer to give you accurate updates rather than a guess that turns out to be wrong.
